Minecraft Paper plugins: a beginner’s installation and update checklist

A plugin should solve a clear problem for your Minecraft community. Start with the behavior you need—such as a shared rule or a way to organize play—rather than installing a long list because it is popular. This guide is for people who administer a Paper server, not ordinary players joining someone else’s world.

Check what your server supports

Paper plugins are not interchangeable with Forge or Fabric mods. Check the plugin’s stated server version, requirements and dependencies before downloading. Use a source you trust: plugins can access the machine running the server, not just your Minecraft world.

Write a short request before shopping for a feature: what should it do, who may use it, and how will you know it works? That helps you avoid overlapping tools and unnecessary complexity.

Prepare a recoverable test

Back up the server before making changes and confirm you know how to restore it. Keep the backup separate from the working folder. If the world matters to a group, agree on a maintenance window instead of interrupting a building session.

Use a test copy where practical. Make one change at a time and keep a simple record of the previous and new versions. A dated note with the reason for the change is more useful than a folder full of files whose purpose nobody remembers.

Install and verify

Paper’s installation guide describes placing the correct plugin .jar in the server’s plugins folder, restarting, and checking the plugins list. Follow the plugin author’s configuration instructions as well.

If it does not load, inspect logs/latest.log for the relevant error. Missing dependencies, incompatible files and duplicate plugin versions are common things to check. Do not paste an entire log publicly without checking it for private information.

  • Test with an ordinary player account as well as an administrator.
  • Check the specific action the plugin is supposed to enable.
  • Keep the previous working configuration until the new setup is confirmed.
  • Tell players what changed and where to report a problem.

Update deliberately

Paper advises caution with automatic updates because compatibility problems can occur. Review the server and plugin release notes together, then test and update deliberately.

A useful maintenance note has four lines: what changed, why, how it was tested, and how to roll back. That makes the next update easier even if another person takes over. The official documentation below is the source of truth for current commands and procedures; this article does not provide plugin downloads or paid hosting.
